Who is responsible
This website is run by Tom Armstrong, Germany. For anything to do with your data, email info@tomarmstrong.net.
Hosting
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc. in the USA. When you open a page, your browser sends technical information, including your IP address, to GitHub’s servers. GitHub logs and stores visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes.
This is necessary to deliver the site securely and reliably, which is my legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. GitHub states that it relies on the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses for transfers of personal data out of the EU. See the GitHub Privacy Statement for details.
Visitor statistics
I use GoatCounter to see how many people visit and which pages they read. GoatCounter uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. The counting script is loaded from GoatCounter’s servers.
For each page view it records the page, the site you came from, your browser and operating system (name and version only), your country (worked out from your IP address), your language and your screen width. It does not store IP addresses or the full browser identifier. Your IP address and browser details are held in memory for at most eight hours, only so that a repeat visit isn’t counted twice. I see aggregated statistics, not individual visitors.
GoatCounter is operated by Martin Tournoij in Ireland, and the data is stored on servers of Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany and Finland. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See GoatCounter’s privacy policy for details.
Contacting me
If you email info@tomarmstrong.net, I use your email address and message to reply to you. The address forwards to my Gmail account: Spaceship, Inc. (USA) forwards the message and Google stores it. I keep emails only as long as the conversation needs them. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your message concerns a possible collaboration, and otherwise my legitimate interest in answering (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Cookies and other services
This site sets no cookies. Fonts, images and scripts are served from this site, apart from the GoatCounter script described above. Links to LinkedIn, GitHub and other sites are ordinary links: those services only receive your data if you follow them, under their own privacy policies.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the data held about you (Art. 15), to have it corrected (Art. 16) or deleted (Art. 17), to restrict its processing (Art. 18), to receive it in a portable format (Art. 20), and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). To use any of these rights, email info@tomarmstrong.net.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), for example the one in the country or German state where you live or work.
